Similarly, the price of fruits such as bananas, mangoes, and watermelons has also increased by 15-20%, while other fruits like apples, pears, and grapes are being sold at even higher rates. This rise in prices is primarily due to the high demand during Ramadan and the supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey conducted by The Nation on Thursday has found that the prices of all vegetables, including commonly used ones such as potatoes, onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chillies, mint, lemon, and coriander, have increased significantly in the local markets. The report suggests that the prices of these vegetables have been increased from Rs 50 per kg to as high as Rs 300 per kg.

The shopkeepers and vendors are violating the price lists issued by the district government’s price control committee and are charging much higher prices for these vegetables than what is recommended by the government. For example, potatoes are being sold at Rs 70 to 90 per kg instead of the recommended rate of Rs 50-54 per kg, onions are being sold at Rs 150-160 per kg instead of Rs 107-127 per kg, and ginger is being sold at Rs 800 to 1000 per kg instead of the government fixed rate of Rs 615- 620 per kg. Similarly, the price of garlic is being sold at Rs 400-600 per kg against the government price of Rs 225-335. The market is facing rampant overcharging and profiteering by shopkeepers and vendors.

Karachi’s Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani has directed the authorities to take strict action against hoarders and profiteers and to ensure the availability of essential commodities at reasonable prices during the holy month. However, the impact of these measures remains limited, and consumers are feeling the pinch of rising prices.

In conclusion,

the high prices of fruits and vegetables during Ramadan are causing a lot of hardship to the people of Karachi, who are already struggling due to the economic crisis in the country. The government needs to take strict action to control the prices and ensure the availability of essential food items at reasonable prices.
